House fire caused by overloaded extension cable

A fire in Clacton caused by an overloaded extension cable has completely destroyed a house. 

Crews were called to a terrace house in Clacton yesterday afternoon (Tuesday) after reports of a fire. 

On arrival firefighters reported that the first floor of the house was completely alight. 

Firefighters worked to stop the fire spreading any further and extinguished it within 40 minutes. 

Fire in a disused warehouse

Firefighters were called to reports of a fire in a disused warehouse in South Benfleet late last night (Tuesday).

On arrival, crews found the warehouse, which was split into three units, with flames reaching around 30 feet above the roof. 

One of the units was completely alight and the roof had collapsed. Firefighters worked quickly to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to the other units and beyond the building.

70 tonnes of wood chip alight

Crews were called to an industrial site following reports of an outdoor fire.

On arrival, firefighters found approximately 70 tonnes of wood chip alight.

They tackled the fire from both the ground and above using an aerial ladder platform. On-site staff supported the operation by helping to move debris and make sure the fire was fully extinguished.

After around three and a half hours, the incident commander confirmed the fire was out and the scene was safe.

Discarded cigarette sparks pub fire

Firefighters were called to a pub in Wivenhoe during the early hours of this morning after a neighbour woke to see a fire in the venue’s outdoor area.

On arrival, crews reported that fencing and an outbuilding were alight. They quickly worked to contain the fire, prevent it from spreading to the main building, and fully extinguish it.

Firefighters then spent time cutting away sections of fencing to make sure the area was completely cooled and safe.

Fire in hotel room

Crews were called to a hotel after reports of smoke coming from a ground floor bedroom. 

On arrival firefighters reported that the room was completely smoke logged and worked to extinguish the fire by 10.55am. 

Guests and staff were evacuated and there were no reported injuries. 

Following an investigation, Essex Police has issued the following statement:

"A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson endangering life following a fire at the Bell Hotel in High Road, Epping.

Firefighters praise neighbour for quick actions during kitchen fire

Firefighters would like to praise a neighbour who acted quickly when noticing a kitchen fire in Colchester earlier today. 

Crews were called to Propelair Way, Colchester at 1:12pm to reports of a flat fire. 

A man had spotted smoke coming from his neighbour’s flat and acted quickly to dial 999 and then help his neighbour and her baby safely escape the flat. 

On arrival, crews reported the flat was heavily smoke logged and found a pan on fire in the kitchen. 

Crews extinguish lorry fire on M11

Crews have extinguished a lorry fire on the M11.

We were called to the southbound carriageway, between junctions 9 (Saffron Walden) and 8 (Bishop's Stortford), today at 8.01pm.

Crews from Newport, Saffron Walden (two) and Stansted extinguished a fire affecting a lorry trailer containing approximately 25 tonnes of beer by 9.03pm.

The road is likely to remain closed into the evening, between junctions 9 and 8, while the trailer is removed.

Discarded cigarette catches garden furniture alight

Firefighters are asking smokers to make sure cigarettes are properly stubbed out after a discarded cigarette caused a garden fire in Chelmsford earlier today. 

Crews were called to a garden fire in Church Avenue, Broomfield at 1:20pm.

On arrival, crews reported garden furniture in the garden was 100% alight and worked to prevent the fire spreading to a house. 

Crews believe the fire was caused by a discarded cigarette.
