Protect the people you care about: let us know who might need help to escape

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service (ECFRS) is urging families and carers to book a free Home Safety Visit for anyone who may find it difficult to escape their home in the event of a fire.
This includes people with reduced mobility, long-term health conditions, or disabilities that may slow down or prevent their ability to get out quickly during an emergency.
Andrea MacAlister, Head of Prevention at Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said:
“We know that for some people escaping from their home in an emergency just isn’t straightforward. That’s why we’re asking carers and families to help us help them – by booking a Home Safety Visit and making sure they have the right support in place.”
During a Home Safety Visit, ECFRS will:
- Provide tailored fire safety advice based on individual needs
- Help plan a safe escape route that works for that person’s mobility
- Check and test smoke alarms
- Identify fire risks in the home
If it’s required, the fire service will also update their system to show that someone at the address may need help evacuating. If a fire is reported at the address, control room staff can share that vital information with fire crews before they arrive – helping firefighters prioritise a safe rescue.
In some cases, where escape may not be possible due to physical limitations or blocked exits, 999 Control operators may advise to get to a room to wait in until help arrives. Control room staff will also stay on the phone, offering reassurance and guidance every step of the way.
Booking a home safety visit is quick, easy and completely free.
If you care for someone who might struggle to escape in a fire, book a visit today and help us make sure they’re protected.
