Unattended candle destroys living room

Firefighters are asking everyone who uses candles to make sure to blow them out every time you need to leave the room after an unattended candle destroyed a living room in Harlow yesterday. 

Crews were called to Felmongers, Harlow at 2:49pm after neighbours heard smoke alarms going off and called us. 

On arrival, crews reported that the house was heavily smoke logged. 

Firefighters wearing Breathing Apparatus entered the home and rescued a dog. 

Shops evacuated after chemical reaction

Firefighters evacuated a number of shops in a shopping centre in Harlow today after a chemical reaction in a basement.

Crews were called to a retail unit in Terminus Street, Harlow at 11:51am.

On arrival, four crews reported that chemicals had reacted in one of the retail units. Firefighters worked with police colleagues to evacuate a number of shops within the area as a precaution. 

Specially trained Detection Identification and Monitoring (DIM) officers were requested to monitor the chemical levels and what threat they posed to the wider public. 

Pan of oil causes kitchen fire

Crews have praised a resident for his quick actions after a kitchen fire.

We were called to Parry Drive, Clacton on Monday (18 December) at 6.02pm and two crews from Clacton attended.

Watch Manager Dave Garratt said: "A pan of oil on the hob had caught alight.

"Unfortunately the flames and smoke damaged the kitchen, but it could have developed into a much bigger fire.

"The incident highlights the importance of taking extra care if you are cooking with hot oil. If it does catch fire, don't throw water on it because it will cause it to spread.

Fire in an industrial building

Firefighters were called to a fire in an industrial building in Purfleet this afternoon. 

On arrival, crews reported an industrial building which uses material bags to filter dust from aggregate had set alight. 

Firefighters from Grays, Orsett, Brentwood were supported by London Fire Brigade to surround the building and isolate the fire. Using the Aerial Ladder Platform (ALP) to flood compartments at the top of the building with water. 

Firefighters rescue two people after car collides with wall

Firefighters rescued two people after their car reversed into the back of a low wall, trapping them in the vehicle. 

Crews from Stansted and Newport were called today at 3.06pm to Station Road, Stansted. 

Firefighters used stabilising blocks and airbags to clear the rubble and free the passengers by 3.40pm. 

Both casualties were left with the Ambulance Service. 

Watch Manager Claire Harrington said: “The crews worked quickly and professionally to remove the rubble around the car and get the casualties out safely.” 

Fire caused by incense stick

Firefighters from Southend were called to an incident on Wakering Road, Shoeburyness on Saturday at 12.25pm. 

Crews used Breathing Apparatus to enter the property as it was smoke logged. 

Firefighters believe the fire was caused by an incense stick which was knocked and began smouldering on dust sheets. 

Watch Manager Mark Petty-Mayor said: “As the resident was leaving his property, he accidentally knocked the burning incense stick over with his coat. They were decorating so it fell on some dust sheets and began smouldering.

Firefighters and coastguard rescue man in rowing boat stuck in mud

Firefighters were called to reports of a person in a rowing boat stuck in mud near Heybridge this evening.  

Crews from Wivenhoe and Tollesbury worked with coastguard colleagues to rescue a man stuck in the water using line rescue paths. As well as using drones to monitor the incident. 

The man downloaded the what3words app to help firefighters and the coastguard identify his location. He was brought to safety by 8pm. 

Water Incident Manager Dave Bond said: “The man became stranded in the mud, about 200m from the shore as the tide went out.
