Garden fire started by gas BBQ spreads to aviary, shed and decking
Our firefighters were called to a garden fire in Harlow which started from a gas BBQ and spread to decking, a fence and a neighbouring aviary.
Thankfully, there were no birds inside. Crews quickly tackled the fire and made the area safe.
Catherine Smith, Crew Manager, said: “Barbecues are a great way to enjoy time with family and friends but they need to be used safely.
"Please keep them well clear of fences, sheds and decking, never leave them unattended, and always make sure they’re fully turned off and cooled before you go inside."
We are reminding people to take extra care when using BBQs. Simple steps can help prevent fires and keep everyone safe this Bank Holiday weekend.
✅ Never leave a BBQ unattended
✅ Make sure it’s fully turned off and cooled before leaving it
✅ Always keep BBQs away from fences, sheds, garages and decking
✅ Never use them inside or in enclosed spaces
✅ Drink responsibly if you're in charge of the cooking
✅ If you're using a disposable BBQ, always place it on a stable surface such as bricks and make sure it has cooled completely before throwing it away
If you're planning a BBQ this Bank Holiday Weekend, following these steps will help you enjoy it safely and reduce the risk of fire.
