Firefighters issue warning after cigarette starts flat fire
A ground floor flat in Harlow has been left badly damaged following a fire early this morning (Tuesday 30 September).
The occupant had gone onto her balcony for a cigarette at around 2am before returning to bed. A short time later, neighbours spotted smoke and flames coming from the flat and quickly raised the alarm. Thankfully, they were able to wake the occupant and she left the property safely.
The fire caused significant damage to the flat, but crews were able to stop it spreading further. Residents in the other four flats were able to remain in their homes.
Firefighters found there were no working smoke alarms in the property. Smoke alarms provide vital early warning of fire and can give people essential time to escape safely.
This incident is also a reminder of the importance of ensuring cigarettes are fully extinguished before being left unattended.
Our home fire safety advice for smokers:
-
Fit smoke alarms on every level of your home and test them regularly.
-
Always make sure cigarettes are properly put out and disposed of safely.
-
Never leave smoking materials where they could easily catch alight.
