Crews have issued safety advice after a gas leak caused flats and businesses to be evacuated.
We were called to Moulsham Street, Chelmsford today (Friday 11 July) at 9.29am after a member of the public smelt gas.
Two crews from Chelmsford attended and found gas had been left on in a business premises.
Station Manager John Warmann said: "It appears the gas had been inadvertently left on overnight. Fortunately a member of the public smelt it and called 999.
"Crews evacuated five flats and two businesses, isolated the gas and ventilated the building.
"The incident is a reminder, whether you're a business or home owner, to make sure you turn your gas appliances are off when you've finished using them. It was pure luck that nothing more serious happened.
"If you've got a gas boiler, open fire or log burner, make sure you have a carbon monoxide alarm."
The incident was left with Cadent at 11.38am.
Do you need a carbon monoxide alarm?
Carbon monoxide poisoning is often called the silent killer as. Without a carbon monoxide detector, it’s difficult to detect the poisonous gas.
We recommend having a working carbon monoxide detector if you have a gas boiler, gas appliances, an open fire or a log burner in your home.
You can buy a carbon monoxide detector from most DIY stores and major supermarkets. We recommend avoiding unbranded alarms. Fore more information visit: https://cadentgas.com/
