Safety Advice For Travellers

Safety advice to help gypsy and traveller communities to avoid fires in their homes.

If you live in a caravan or trailer, remember to follow basic fire safety precautions:

  • Fit a smoke detector in your caravan

  • Find out about firefighting arrangements on the site

  • Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children

  • Take care in the kitchen and never leave cooking unattended

  • Keep a torch handy for emergencies

  • If you smoke, use suitable ashtrays and never smoke in bed

  • Before going to bed or leaving the caravan, turn off all appliances

  • Keep the caravan ventilated and make sure you don't block any air vents

  • Get a registered Corgi gas fitter to fit and regularly service any gas appliances

  • Fit smoke alarms in your home. Test them once a week, clean them once a month and change them once a year

  • Buy a Carbon Monoxide alarm from a DIY store

  • Check all gas fittings. Use arrester values on gas bottles and make sure your home is adequately ventilated
