Public urged to stay wildfire aware ahead of warmer weather

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service is asking the public to remain vigilant about fire safety as temperatures start to rise.

Group Manager Mark Eaglestone said: “Hot weather is set to continue this week and peak on Thursday with highs of 29°C in parts of England.

“While we want everyone to enjoy the sunshine, we’re urging the public to help us reduce the risk of wildfires. It may not be peak summer yet, but with little recent rainfall and rising temperatures, dry grass and vegetation can catch fire quickly.”

To help protect Essex’s countryside and green spaces, residents and visitors are being asked to take simple precautions:

  • Avoid lighting campfires or using disposable barbecues, especially in parks, forests, and open spaces.
  • Dispose of all litter responsibly. If bins are full or unavailable, take rubbish home with you.
  • Smokers should ensure cigarettes are fully stubbed out before being discarded.

Mark adds: “It only takes a single spark to start a wildfire. By making small changes, everyone can help prevent fires that could harm wildlife, destroy natural landscapes, and put lives at risk.”

If you see a wildfire:

  • Move to a safe location immediately.
  • Call 999 and ask for the fire service.
  • If possible, use the what3words app to help emergency services pinpoint your exact location.
