Make a plan: Fire service urges families to practice escape routes at home

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service (ECFRS) is encouraging families across Essex to take simple but life-saving steps to prepare their children for what to do if a fire breaks out at home.
Children can become frightened or confused in an emergency. That’s why practising a fire escape plan together can make all the difference.
Aileen Wilson, ECFRS's Education and Specialist Interventions Manager, said:
“We know how busy family life can be, but taking just a few minutes to talk about your escape plan, and even better, practice it, can save lives. If a fire starts at home, every second counts. Children especially benefit from knowing exactly what to do.”
Three simple steps for families
- Plan your escape route – Make sure everyone knows the quickest and safest way out.
- Practice together – Do a walk through with your children so it becomes second nature.
- Test smoke alarms – Make sure alarms are working and everyone knows the sound they make.
To support families, ECFRS offers free home safety visits. A friendly member of our team can visit your home to help you create or check your escape plan, test and fit smoke alarms if needed and offer personalised fire safety advice
We’ve also got some fun, educational activity sheets to help children learn about fire safety and escape routes in a playful way. They’re available to download for free on our website, perfect for keeping little ones engaged during half term.
