Fire service reassures Harlow high-rise residents following Redstone House closure

Following the closure of Redstone House in Harlow due to serious fire safety concerns, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service (ECFRS) is stepping up its presence in the area to offer support and reassurance to residents living in other high-rise buildings across the town.
Firefighters and community safety officers visited 10 neighbouring high-rise blocks on Thursday 9 May to speak directly with residents, provided fire safety advice, and answered any questions or concerns they had. In total, over 300 households are engaged with.
Area Manager Dave Bond, Assistant Director of Prevention and Protection at ECFRS, said:
“We know that the closure of Redstone House may understandably caused concern for people living in similar buildings. We want to reassure every resident that their safety is our top priority.
“Our teams are going door-to-door in high-rise blocks in Harlow, making sure residents understand their building’s evacuation plan, have working smoke alarms, and know how to book a free home safety visit.”
The fire service is encouraging all residents - particularly those in high-rise homes - to take three simple steps to improve their safety:
- Know your escape route – your landlord should provide this information
- Check your smoke alarms regularly
- Book a free home safety visit at: www.essex-fire.gov.uk/book
The Prohibition Notice issued at Redstone House on Thursday 8 May followed concerns that the property does not meet fire regulations. Specifically, the fire service believes if there was a fire in the building there is potential this would remain undetected and pose significant risk to those living in the building. This would mean residents would not be able to evacuate quickly and safely and which would put residents at a higher risk of serious injury or death. The building was deemed unsafe for residential use and residents were supported in vacating the property.
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service continues to work closely with Harlow Council and other partners to ensure all residents have the information and support they need.
