Essex success at Fire Cadet National Games 2025

Cadets from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service have achieved outstanding success at the 2025 National Fire Cadet Games in Wales, in their first appearance at the event in more than four years.
The Games took place at Cardiff Metropolitan University and brought together more than 200 cadets from across the UK, forming 31 teams to compete in a wide range of challenges inspired by real-life fire and rescue situations.
Essex was represented by two teams made up of cadets from Orsett, Great Baddow and Clacton, demonstrating exceptional skill, teamwork and determination throughout the event.
In the headline Main Technical Challenge, which tested drill yard skills, hose work, knot tying and equipment recognition, Essex Team 1 secured the Gold medal. Judges praised the team’s teamwork, strong communication, and confident execution under pressure.
Their teamwork was further reflected in the way Team 2 supported Team 1, sharing insights and encouragement after completing their challenge first.
Essex Team 2 went on to secure Silver in the Water Rescue event. Evan Oastler from Team 2 was the only participant in the entire competition to hit all three water targets - an impressive and unique achievement.
In the virtual Search and Rescue scenario, Essex cadets navigated a simulated high-rise rescue, locating people, pets, and securing a gas leak. Team 2 placed 9th out of 31 teams in this complex task.
Cadets also took part in a wide range of other activities, including:
-
A “Floor is Lava” team-building challenge focused on co-ordination and problem-solving
-
A presentation and public speaking challenge, scored on delivery and clarity
-
Home fire safety visit role-plays to simulate community engagement
-
A trauma Incident where teams had to demonstrate their first aid skills, teamwork and communication.
-
Education workshops, such as Fire Angels and Media content creation where cadets learned about other aspects of Fire Services and the MET University.
Aileen Wilson, Education and Specialist Intervention Manager at Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, praised the teams for their focus and determination and carrying the flag for Essex.
Aileen added: “We couldn’t be more proud of our cadets who continue to go from strength to strength. They trained hard, worked as one, and truly represented Essex with pride, professionalism and passion. To come home with Gold and Silver is a credit to their commitment and teamwork.
"I would also like to express our heartfelt gratitude to our instructors for their unwavering dedication and effort in supporting our cadets. They play a pivotal role in helping these young individuals become confident and active citizens in our communities."
The Essex County Fire and Rescue Service Fire Cadet Programme offers young people aged 13 to 17 the opportunity to develop life skills, build confidence, and learn about fire and rescue service operations in a structured, inclusive environment.
Cadets take part in weekly sessions, practical training, community projects and public safety campaigns, all while working towards recognised qualifications.
The National Fire Cadet Games is a flagship event supported by fire and rescue services from across the UK, designed to bring cadets together to challenge themselves, build friendships and celebrate their achievements in a spirit of teamwork and service.
