Twelve new firefighters have been welcomed to Essex County Fire and Rescue Service during an uplifting passing out ceremony as proud families, friends and colleagues gathered to celebrate their achievements.

The new recruits will now join fire stations across the county, including Basildon, Brentwood, Chelmsford, Colchester, Grays, Loughton, Orsett and Southend, where they will begin their careers serving our communities.

During the ceremony, the firefighters took part in a series of drill displays, demonstrating the skills and teamwork they have developed throughout their 17-week training course.

The event, held at the Service Training Centre in Witham, was attended by Chief Fire Officer/Chief Executive Rick Hylton and Deputy Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Jane Gardner, who joined guests in congratulating the new firefighters on their achievements.

Chief Fire Officer/Chief Executive Rick Hylton said: “Our passing out parades are always a highlight of the year and it was a real privilege to see our new firefighters showcasing the skills and professionalism they’ve worked so hard to achieve.

“Every one of them has shown great determination and a real commitment to serving our communities. It was fantastic to share that pride with their families and friends, who’ve supported them every step of the way.

“Joining Essex County Fire and Rescue Service is about joining a team that puts people first. I’m confident these new firefighters will make a real difference across the county.”

Deputy Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Jane Gardner added: “It was wonderful to see the pride on display from both the new recruits and their families. They’ve all shown such passion and professionalism during their training and have clearly embraced the values of our Service.

“The people of Essex can be proud of these new firefighters, who are joining a Service dedicated to protecting and supporting our communities. I wish them all long and rewarding careers.”

A special presentation was made during the ceremony for the Top Recruit of the Squad Award, presented to the firefighter who has shown outstanding determination, professionalism and teamwork, and who has consistently demonstrated the Service’s values throughout the training course.

This year’s Top Recruit of the Squad Award was presented to Firefighter Amber Tapsell.

If you think this is the role for you, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service will be opening up wholetime recruitment in summer 2026.
