A fundraising campaign launched after a serious field fire in Rayleigh has raised £3,388 for the Firefighters’ Charity, as a gesture of thanks to the crews who brought the blaze under control.

The fire broke out near Amersham Court, Rawreth Lane, at around 3.38pm on 18 July 2025, destroying three hectares of standing crop, damaging an outbuilding, and threatening nearby homes. Thankfully, no-one was injured.

Nine crews from across Essex responded swiftly, containing the blaze before it spread further.

In the days after the incident, residents launched a JustGiving appeal. Although the fundraiser was originally set up to support the affected farmer, he asked that all proceeds be given to the Firefighters’ Charity in recognition of the crews’ bravery and professionalism.

Cllr Danielle Belton, Leader of Rochford District Council, joined fire crews at Rayleigh Weir Fire Station on Saturday morning (20 September) to personally thank them for their swift response to the fire.

Cllr Belton said: “The generosity shown by local people after the Rawreth Lane fire was incredible.

"The farmer’s decision to pass on this money to the Firefighters’ Charity is a powerful gesture of thanks. It shows just how much people value the bravery and dedication of Essex firefighters.

"I want to thank everyone who donated.”

The farmer, whose land was affected by the fire, thanked firefighters for their "unwavering commitment and bravery in what was a very serious situation for our neighbours and ourselves," adding: "When many of us would run away from the danger, the fire service tackled it head on."

Carl Suckling, Crew Manager at Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, added: “We’re very grateful for this wonderful gesture from the community we serve.

"It’s a reminder that people see and appreciate the work our crews do to keep Essex safe.

"The money will help the Firefighters’ Charity continue providing vital support for firefighters and their families.”
