Flat fire

Crews were called to a fire in a first-floor flat above shops on Wednesday 15 October in Halstead High Street.

The fire started in the fireplace within the living room area. Firefighters quickly contained the fire to the chimney and living room, preventing further spread.

No one was injured during the incident. Crews used thermal imaging cameras to check void spaces and ensure there were no hidden hot spots or fire spread to other parts of the property.

Station Manager Steve Bryne said:

“Chimney fires can happen at any time of year, but they’re more common as the weather turns colder and people start lighting fires again. If you have an open fire or wood burner, make sure your chimney is swept regularly by a qualified chimney sweep, only burn suitable, dry materials and never store anything too close to the fireplace or log burner.

"Always use a fire guard, ensure embers are fully out before you go to bed, and never leave a fire unattended. Regular maintenance and good fire safety habits can prevent chimney fires and keep your home safe.”
