Field fire
Firefighters were called to a field fire near Stambridge Road, Rochford this afternoon.
On arrival, crews from Rochford, Leigh, Southend and Hawkwell reported a large field of standing corn was on fire.
Crews requested the help of Billericay’s off-road vehicle and Corringham’s Water Bowser to hep contain the fire and prevent it spreading.
Firefighters worked alongside a farmer using machinery and water from the farm to help extinguish the fire by 3:05pm.
Station Manager Rick Williams said: “We’d like to thank Anthony the farmer who helped us at the scene. Working in collaboration was really effective using his cultivating machine to create fire breaks as well as using his water tank holding a 4,000 litre tank of water that replenishes itself. With his help, crews were able to cut the fire off faster so it didn’t spread.
“With another heatwave on the way, the risk of wildfires is higher. If you spot a wildfire dial 999 immediately to help us get to the scene as quickly as possible. To help give us a more accurate location especially in rural areas, we recommend downloading the free app what3words.”
How farmers can support us during wildfires:
1. Use what3words for reporting fires
In rural areas, addresses and farm names aren’t always enough. what3words gives a precise 3m x 3m location. When every second counts, this helps us get to the right spot, fast.
2. Work with us on fuel breaks
If a wildfire approaches, we may ask for your help to create fuel breaks using ploughs or machinery. This must be done under direction from fire officers on the scene to ensure safety and coordination.
3. Tell us about controlled burns
Planning a bonfire or other controlled fire? Let us know. This prevents false alarms and allows us to monitor if necessary. A quick phone call could save resources being sent to a non-emergency.
