Meet Lee, an on-call firefighter in South Woodham Ferrers

Full time fencer Lee Murray is an on-call firefighter at South Woodham Ferrers Fire Station. A role he is paid to do on top of his day job.

Coming from a family of firefighters, 34-year-old Lee knew from a young age that this was something he would love to do.

“As a child, I loved visiting the fire station with my dad and seeing all that went on behind the scenes and the impact it had on the local community,” says Lee.

Lee loves the diversity of the role and has attended a variety of incidents during his career. “You never know when or what the call you receive will be for. When your pager does go off, the adrenaline rush you get is amazing!” he says.

While working full time and raising a young family, Lee is able to provide 90 hours cover a week at South Woodham Ferrers Fire Station. He is paid for the time he can be on call as well as an additional payment when he is called out.

While a struggle at times, Lee says: “I have managed to arrange my on call hours around any family commitments.”

We’re currently recruiting on-call firefighters at South Woodham Ferrers Fire Station. Lee advises anyone interested in the role to: “Speak to your immediate family to ensure that you can fit the role into your current lifestyle and if you can’t, are you willing to make sacrifices to make it work for you? If you can it is the most rewarding and exciting job.”
