Helping you get firefighter fit
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service has launched a brand new guide to help applicants reach the required standard to become a firefighter.
The 17 page guide, which features a range of information about the National Firefighter Selection Tests and the seven physical assessments which form it, is designed to support applicants in creating a personal training programme.
Starting from the very first warm-up, the guide offers various tips on how to improve both aerobic fitness and strength.
Whether you’re thinking of applying to become a firefighter or even just want to stick to a New Year’s Resolution to get fitter, the guide will help improve your fitness and give you something to aim for this year.
The exercises can all be completed at home (all you need is dumbbells or a barbell) and by running outside.
You can download a copy to keep.

Come along to one of our firefighter taster sessions to find out more about the role and try out some of the physical tests you’d need to perform during recruitment and training. Our firefighters and fitness advisors will all be on hand to offer advice and support.
