Essex County Fire and Rescue Service

Dovercourt Fire station's open day and recruitment day this Saturday

Dovercourt Fire Station is holding its annual open day on Saturday 28 July and inviting anyone interested in becoming an on-call firefighter to come along too.

The call comes as part of Essex County Fire and Rescue Service’s (ECFRS) countywide on-call firefighter recruitment campaign.

To support the county-wide recruitment drive ECFRS has launched a new website for future on-call firefighters. provides future recruits with information about the role, fitness advice and a portal to apply online.

It also answers the usual queries around exactly what an on-call firefighter does, how their pay works and how it fits alongside a day job.

The website was originally created for the wholetime firefighter recruitment drive which took place earlier this year, and has now been expanded to include on-call recruitment too.

In 2016 ECFRS held a public consultation which outlined that Dovercourt Fire Station would change from day-crewed to on-call.

This means instead of having firefighters in the fire station during the day Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm, firefighters will now respond to incidents via a pager, just as they already do in Dovercourt between 6pm – 9am on weekdays and the at weekends.

To become an on-call firefighter you must live or work within five minutes of an on-call fire station, be over 18 and be physically fit, though support will be given to help you meet fitness requirements.

If you’re interested in applying to become an on-call firefighter in Dovercourt and want to know more, visit or drop in to the station anytime between 10am – 4pm on Saturday 28 July.
