Firefighters were called to a property in Ongar this morning, after smoke alarms alerted a family to a fire in their home.

On arrival, firefighters confirmed a semi-detached property was completely alight, and the fire was spreading rapidly.

Crews worked hard to prevent the fire from spreading into the adjoining property and managed to contain the fire by 1pm.

Station Manager, Toby Ingham, said: “I want to thank the crews for working hard in challenging conditions. The fire was spreading quickly, and our firefighters managed to contain the majority of the fire to the affected property.

“Sadly, a family have been left homeless as a result of the fire today but, fortunately the property had working smoke alarms and we’re pleased to confirm that nobody was hurt.

“I’d also like to thank Essex Police who were at the scene helping to keep the public safe while we worked to extinguish the fire.”

Firefighters believe the fire was started accidentally. A full investigation is being carried out to determine the cause.

We recommend you have at least one working smoke alarm on every level of your home.
