Firefighters were called to a kitchen fire in Chelmsford this afternoon after a man came home to his smoke alarms going off.

On arrival, crews reported that there was a small fire in the kitchen and worked to extinguish it by 2:11pm.

The fire was caused after the hob was accidentally turned on and items on top of it caught alight.

The kitchen suffered some smoke damage and a man was treated by the Ambulance Service for smoke inhalation.

Crew Manager Nathan Godfrey from Chelmsford Fire Station said: “We’d urge the public just to double check your hob is turned off before leaving the house, it’s easy to accidentally turn it on without realising and we’d advise you to never leave items on the hob.

"We’d also advise everyone in Essex to check your smoke alarms are working, this man was alerted to the fire by his working smoke alarms.”
