Fire affects four properties

In attendance: 2 x Colchester, 1 x Tiptree, 1 x Brightlingsea, 1 x Mersea, 1 x Clacton, 1 x Chelmsford (ALP)

Firefighters were called to the scene of a fire involving multiple properties within a domestic premises this morning.

The fire had spread to four flats and the roof of the building, which is two storeys and measures approximately 10 metres by 50 metres.

On arrival the officer in charge immediately requested further support, including an Aerial Ladder Platform (ALP) to allow crews to tackle the fire from above.

Update 11am - All occupants of the building have been safely evacuated. The Incident Commander has sectorised the incident to ensure firefighters can surround and contain the fire as quickly as possible.

Update 12.15pm - Firefighters are continuing to tackle hotspots within the structure of the building using the ALP.

Update 1.30pm - Crews are now dampening down the remaining hotspots within the structure.

Update 4pm - The fire is now out. Firefighters have left the property in the hands of the local authority to make safe.


Essex Police statement:

"A man has been arrested following a fire at an address in Attlee Gardens, Colchester.
"We were called shortly after 10.15am on Saturday, January 5 to reports of a fire at a flat.
"A 34 year-old man from Colchester has been arrested on suspicion of arson endangering life and he has been released on bail until January 28."
