Fire Extinguisher Training

Course overview

This course is for all members of staff and is available in half day or two hour formats. The course covers classes of fire, types of fire extinguishers available, general information as detailed in Government guidance and safety tips.

The course is available at our training centres or at an organisations own site.

Subject to specific safety requirements a practical session can be included and delegates may have the opportunity of fighting small fires with extinguishers.

Course objectives

Delegates on this course will have a greater understanding of different types of fires that they may face in their workplace. By the end of the course delegates should be able to identify different types of fire, select an appropriate fire extinguisher for a small fire and implement simple safety measures to reduce risk when attempting to tackle a fire.

Programme

• Fire awareness

Providing delegates with an understanding on how fires start and spread throughout buildings. This session examines large fires that have occurred in the UK.

• Classes of fire

This session looks at the different classes and types of fire that delegates may face in their workplace. This includes the various risks associated with each class of fire.

• Fire extinguisher theory


This section of the course looks Class A (solids and textiles etc) fires, Class B (liquids and liquefiable solids) fires, Class C (gases and LPGs) fires, Class D (base metals) fires, electrical fires and Class F (cooking oil) fires.

• Fire extinguisher general information

This part of the course looks sighting of extinguishers, quantity required in a workplace and maintenance requirements.. It provides delegates with an understanding of the importance of ensuring that fire extinguishers are kept readily available for use in the event that a fire occurs in their building.

• Safety tips when using a fire extinguisher

This session looks at the simple rules that should be applied when using a fire extinguisher on a small fire in the workplace.

• Practical exercise / Use of fire extinguishers video

This part of the course provides delegates with the opportunity of tackling small fires in a safe and controlled environment using our LPG fuelled fire training rig (subject to meeting our practical fire training area risk assessment). Alternatively delegates can view a video showing how fire extinguishers are used on a range of small fires.
