Incidents

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service offers a 24/7 service to the press. Our incident database is updated on a regular basis by the media team and we have established a hotline - 01376 570 814 - where you will be able to reach us round-the-clock. If you are not the Media, USE 01376 576000 for other enquiries. We do ask that routine press check calls are not made between 10pm and 6am, because all items of interest will be posted here as they happen. Please note this is NOT a service for the public and press from outside our local area are asked politely to adhere to these guidelines.
Photographs from incidents may be downloaded for publication. These may be used free of charge by all accredited newspapers and media agencies providing they carry a credit to Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. Breaches of this arrangement will result in an invoice of £70 per image. Our film footage may also be used under similar arrangement.

    Firefighters have been called to assist at the scene of a road traffic collision involving two cars and one lorry. Crews used specialist cutting gear to free one female casualty. The incident was dealt with by 19:12 hrs.

    Firefighters are working to release two people trapped following a two vehicle RTC.

    Details: Fibre glass mouldings alight

    Address: Springwood Industrial Estate, Braintree

    Attendance: 2 x Braintree, 1 x Halstead

    Firefighters are tackling a fire involving a number of fibre glass mouldings at an art foundry.

    The fire has created a large amount of smoke and ECFRS have received dozens of calls to this incident.

    Update 11:40hrs: Firefighters in breathing apparatus are using two hose reel jets to tackle the fire. The incident commander reports that the fire involves a number of fibre glass mouldings which are completely alight.

    Update: Firefighters extinguished the fire by 11:56hrs using two main jets. Crews have reported that the fire started accidentally.

    Details: Chemical Incident

    Address: Anerley Road, Westcliff

    Attendance: 3 x Southend, 1 x Rayleigh Weir

    Firefighters have been called to a chemical incident in a ground floor flat - measuring six metres by 10 metres - which has left two people suffering breathing difficulties.

    Update 14:15hrs: It has been confirmed that the occupants of the flat had mixed sulphuric acid and toilet cleaner in the toilet bowl, creating a dangerous gas which affected their breathing.

    Firefighters in breathing apparatus have entered the flat and are ventilating it with a positive pressure ventilation fan. The gas does not pose any danger to neighbours.

    Firefighters completed their work at the scene by 14:20hrs.

    Firefighters were called to a road traffic collision involving two vehicles. When they arrived at the scene, crews reported no-one was trapped. They made the vehicles safe before leaving the scene at 19:59 hrs.

    Crews were called to assist at the scene ofa road traffic collision involving two vehicles. Firefighters arriving at the scene reported that no-one was trapped. They made the vehicles and roadway safe before leaving the scene.

    Details: Chicken Shed Alight

    Address: Tudwick Road, Tiptree

    Attendance: 1 x tiptree, 1 x Tollesbury

    Firefighters are tackling a fire in a chicken shed measuring 80 metres by 20 metres which is 30% alight.

    Crews in breathing apparatus are using one hose reel jet to tackle the blaze.

    Update 10:37hrs: Crews wearing breathing apparatus have now extinguished the fire using two hose reel jets. Around 300 chickens died in the fire.

    An investigation will be carried out to establish the cause.

    Details: Lorries and tyres alight

    Address: M25, junction 29, Codham Hall Interchange

    Attendance: 2 x Brentwood, 2 x Orsett, 1 x Basildon, 1 x water bowser from Chelmsford, 1 x Harold Hill (London FB), 1 x Romford (London FB)

    Firefighters are tackling a blaze involving 12 lorries and around 100 lorry tyres. Crews arriving at the scene report that the vehicles and tyres are fully engulfed in flames.
    The alarm was raised by a security guard on a routine check at the container company premises just off the M25.
    Initially three appliances were sent to the scene. But on arrival, the incident commander requested a further two appliances along with the water bowser from Chelmsford for extra water supplies.
    At 01:08 hrs, crews in breathing apparatus were using two hose reels and one jet to tackle the blaze with some 45 firefighters involved in firefighting operations.
    Once the fire is out, a joint Police and Fire Service investigation will be carried out to establish the cause.
    At 01:52 hrs, crews confirm that the fire involving the lorry tyres has now been extinguished using foam and that firefighting operations continue.
    At 01:56 hrs, the incident commander reports steady progress in bringing the incident under control. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are using two main jets and two hose reels to tackle the incident.
    No local roads have been affected by the incident.
    The incident was under control by 02:23 hrs. A relief crew remained at the scene turning over and damping down to extinguish two remaining hotspots. At 05:38, crews reported all appears cool at the scene and left the incident.
    Investigtions into the cause are continuing.

    Details: Road traffic collision - two casualties

    Address: Baker Street, Orsett, junction with Stanford Road

    Attendance: 2 x Orsett

    Firefighters used specialist cutting equipment to free two casualties trapped in their vehicle following a road traffic collision. Crews had to remove the roof of the vehicle so that the casualties could be removed safely. They were left in the care of the Ambulance Service.
    The incident involved two vehicles, though the second did not stop. The incident was dealt with by 19:16 hrs.
