Incidents

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service offers a 24/7 service to the press. Our incident database is updated on a regular basis by the media team and we have established a hotline - 01376 570 814 - where you will be able to reach us round-the-clock. We do ask that routine check calls are not made between 10pm and 6am, because all items of interest will be posted here as they happen. Please note this is NOT a service for the public and press from outside our local area are asked politely to adhere to these guidelines.
Photographs from incidents may be downloaded for publication. These may be used free of charge by all accredited newspapers and media agencies providing they carry a credit to Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. Breaches of this arrangement will result in an invoice of £60 per image. Our film footage may also be used under similar arrangement.

    Details: Flat fire-man rescued

    Address: York Road, Southend

    Attendance: 3 x Southend, 1 x Leigh

    Firefighters rescued a 60 year old man from a ground floor flat, which was 40 percent smoke logged.  The man suffered from smoke inhalation and was placed in the care of the Ambulance Service.
    Crews wore breathing apparatus and used one hose reel to extinguish the fire by 20:13  Crews then ventilated the flat using a specialist fan.

    Details: Horse rescued

    Address: Greenbury Way, Chelmsford

    Attendance: 1 x Chelmsford, 1 x Harlow

    Firefighters were called to horse with it's rear foot stuck in the wooden bulkhead of a horse box.  A vet was called in to assist the fire crews with the horse and a set of specialist cutting equipment was used to free the horse by 14:00

    Details: Fuel tanks on fire

    Address: Patch Park Farm, Ongar Road, Abridge

    Attendance: 2 x Loughton, 2 x Epping, 1 x Harlow, 2 x Rayleigh Weir, 1 x Hainault, 1 x Woodford (London Fire Brigade)

    Firefighters have been called to three fuel tanks on fire in the yard of a farm.

    Update 22:20 Incident Commander-Divisional Officer Mark Samuels reports:
    Fire crews are dealing with three petrol tanks well alight.

    DO Samuels reports:
    The three tanks contain approximately 30,000 litres of chrysene.  Numerous vehicles and propane cylinders are also involved in the fire.

    Crews are wearing breathing apparatus and are using one main jet to extinguish the fire.

    7 February
    Update 00:30 Crews are continuing to extinguish the fire using a monitor and foam.

    Crews extinguished the fire by 01:36, a total of 10 sets of breathing apparatus were used, three main jets and foam.

    DO Samuels said: "Crews worked in arduous conditions as they dealt with four fuel tanks, numerous vehicles, tyres, timber, cylinders and a number of mobile homes on fire.

    "Various cylinders involved in the fire exploded and an exclusion zone was set up.  Crews from ECFRS and London Fire Brigade did an excellent job preventing the fire from spreading.

    The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage, ECFRS and the police will carry out an investigation.

    Details: Fire at fuel yard

    Address: West Station Yard, Spital Road, Maldon

    Attendance: 3 x Maldon, 2 x Witham, 1 x Tiptree, 1 x Woodham Ferrers, 3 x Grays, 1 x Brentwood, 1 x Control support vehicle

    Firefighters have been called to a fire in a fuel yard. 

    Update 19:30 Incident Commander-Assistant Divisional Officer Simon Dedman reports that four fuel lorries are on fire in the yard and are well alight.

    Update 20:15 The fire has now been extinguished, crews used foam, two slim jet monitors, one foam branch, four jets, two hose reels and one foam tanker.

    Divisional Officer Andy Stapleton said:

    "Crews worked excellently to prevent the fire from spreading to fuel storage tanks in the yard.  The fire affected four lorries in the yard."

    The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage, ECFRS and the police will carry out an investigation.

    Firefighters were called to an RTC involving three vehicles.  No one was trapped and crews made the vehicles safe by 20:39

    Address: Deanery Hill, Braintree

    Attendance: 2 x Braintree, 1 x Colchester

    Firefighters were called to an RTC involving two vehicles.  One person was trapped and crews released the casualty by 21:04 using one set of specialist cutting equipment.

    Firefighters were called to an RTC involving a car and a flat bed lorry.  One woman was trapped and crews used two sets of specialist cutting equipment to release her by 16:18

    Attendance: 2 x Chelmsford, 1 x Baddow

    Firefighters have been called to a garage and coal shed on fire.  Crews are wearing breathing apparatus and are using three hose reels to extinguish the fire.

    Update 23:30 Firefighters have contained the fire and are now turning over and damping down.

    Attendance: 1 x Shoeburyness, 1 x Rayleigh Weir, 3 x Southend

    Firefighters have been called to a derelict out-building on fire. Crews are using one jet and one hose reel, assisted by the aerial ladder platform to extinguish the fire.

    The fire was extinguished by 10:34  The cause of the fire is unknown and an investigation will be carried out by ECFRS and the police.View Incident Images
