Incidents

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service offers a 24/7 service to the press. Our incident database is updated on a regular basis by the media team and we have established a hotline - 01376 570 814 - where you will be able to reach us round-the-clock. We do ask that routine check calls are not made between 10pm and 6am, because all items of interest will be posted here as they happen. Please note this is NOT a service for the public and press from outside our local area are asked politely to adhere to these guidelines.
Photographs from incidents may be downloaded for publication. These may be used free of charge by all accredited newspapers and media agencies providing they carry a credit to Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. Breaches of this arrangement will result in an invoice of £70 per image. Our film footage may also be used under similar arrangement.

    Details: RTC - woman trapped

    Address: Church Street, Coggeshall

    Attendance: 1 x Coggeshall, 1 Braintree, 1 x Colchester

    Firefighters are working to release a woman trapped by her injuries following two vehicle RTC. Crews are working with paramedics to get her safely out of the car.

    Update - Crews had released the woman by 14:28hrs. They used one set of hydraulic cutting equipment.

    Details: Shed fire at probation site

    Address: Ongar Road,Writtle

    Attendance: 2 xChelmsford

    Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels to tackle afire in a shed used by the Probation Service behind Longmead House.The incident was dealt with by 03:20 hrs. A joint Police and Fire Service investigation will be carried out to establish the cause.

    Details: Field Fire

    Address: Riddings Lane, Harlow

    Attendance: 1 x Loughton, 2 x Old Harlow, 1 x Ongar

    Firefighters are tackling a fire in an area of grassland. initially two appliances were sent to deal with the incident but the officer in charge requested two more pumps because the fire was beginning to encroach on an adjacent corn field.

    Details: Tyres on Fire

    Address: Hunters Hall, Epping Uplands, Epping

    Attendance: 1 x Epping, 2 x Harlow, 1 x Ongar

    Firefighters tackled a fire in a container full of tyres, paint and other rubbish. The container measured 10 metres by 10 metres and was six metres tall.

    Using two main jets and one hose reel jet crews had extinguished the fire by 15:53hrs. Crews were hampered by poor water supplies and a water shuttle - in which fire engines take it in turns to leave the site and replenish water supplies - was used.

    Details: Road traffic collision

    Address: A127, Basildon

    Attendance: 2 x Rayleigh Weir, 1 x Billericay

    Crews were called by Ambulance to assist at a three-vehicle road traffic collision. No-one was trapped but firefighters cleared a fuel spillage from the road and made the vehicle safe before leaving the incident at 17:43 hrs. We have no further details.

    Details: Tyre Fire

    Address: Chapel Lane, Boxted

    Attendance: 2 x Colchester, 1 x Manningtree, 1 x Wivenhoe, 1 x Weeley

    Firefighters have been called to tyre fire in the traveller site in Chapel Lane, Boxted. initially two fire engines were sent, a third was then added because of the number of calls the service received. The officer in charge then called for a fourth appliance because cylinders are involved in the fire. He then asked for fifth fire engine because of water shortage at the site.

    Update 11:40hrs - The officer in charge reports that it is a fire measuring 50 metres by 60 metres involving cylinders and involved tyres and cylinders. Firefighters are using jets to cover surrounding risks - a house and two stables block. Crews are using two hose reel jets and one ground monitor.

    Update 13:00hrs - The fire has now been downgraded to three appliances. The cause of the fire will be investigated.

    Details: Flat fire - woman rescued

    Address: Haygate Avenue, Southend

    Attendance: 2 x Southend

    Crews led a woman in her mid 20s to safety after fire broke out in her ground floot flat. The casualty was suffering from the affects of smoke inhalation and was left in the care of the Ambulance Service.
    Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used one hose reel to tackle the fire in the two storey building measuring 10m x 7m and used as a house of multiple occupancy. They reported that the whole of the flat was heavily smoke logged and after the fire was out, crews used a high pressure fan to clear the flat of smoke.
    The incident was dealt with by 03:55 hrs.

    Details: Road traffic collision - female trapped

    Address: Sutton Road, Southend

    Attendance: 2 x Southend, 1 x Rochford

    Crews used specialist cutting equipment to free a woman from a car which left the roadway and ended up embedded in trees in shrub land. Three people were travelling in the vehicle but two had been released before the arrival of firefighters.
    Once released, the woman was left in the care of the Ambulance Service while crews made the vehicle safe before leaving the scene at 23:05 hrs.

    Details: Workshop fire

    Address: Pelham Road, Clavering

    Attendance: 1 x Newport, 1 x Stansted

    Firefighters are using two jets and one hose reel to tackle a fire in an outbuilding used as a garage and workshop. On arrival at the scene, crews reported that the whole of the building, measuring 10m x 5m, was well alight.
    At 00:19 hrs, crews report that four hose reels are now in use and that they are making steady progress in bringing the incident under control.
    The fire was out by 00:54 hrs.
    We have no information relating to the cause at this stage.

    Details: Eight pump fire at club on old garrison site

    Address: The Officers Club, St Johns Green, Colchester

    Attendance: 2 x Colchester, 1 x Wivenhoe, 1 x Nayland (Suffolk FRS), 1 x West Mersea, 1 x Tiptree, 1 x Tollesbury, 1 x Manningtree

    More than 40 firefighters are involved in tackling a blaze in the old Officers Club - a timber building measuring 30m x 40m on the old Colchester Garrison site. At 23:17 hrs, firefighters reported that the building was well alight and that they were using two hose reels to tackle flames.
    Update 00:23 hrs: Divisional Officer Danny Fearn, the officer in charge, reports that the fire is still well alight. Crews are now using five jets, one ground monitor and two covering jets in an effort to bring the blaze under control. Firefighters are working in three sectors to tackle the incident.
    A joint Police and Fire Service investigation will be carried out to establish the cause of the fire which is thought to be suspicious.
    Update 01:24 hrs (Monday): Station Officer Martin Pullen reports that the fire is now surrounded and that crews are using five main jets, three hose reels and one ground monitor as the fire now comes under control.
    "The building is still used as a club and it was in use earlier in the evening though no-one was inside at the time of the fire.
    "The club sits on the edge of the old Garrison site and is surrounded by quite a number of homes and a church and a few families living closest to the fire have been evacuated because of the potential risk of spread.
    "Crews are working to put out the fire and to protect surrounding properties from radiant heat and making good progress.
    "Parts of the single storey building are starting to collapse and we feel confident at this stage that we will soon be able to scale back operations as the fire comes under control."
    At 01:45 hrs, crews reported that approximately 75 per cent of the building has collapsed.
    At 04:35 hrs, the officer in charge reports that crews are using two main jets and one hose reel and making steady progress. The fire was under control by 02:56 hrs.
    At 05:20 hrs, crews were turning over and damping down. The fire is extinguished but they are making sure that there are no hotspots and no change of re-ignition. A two pump relief will be taking over at 05:30 hrs.At 08:30 hrs, a two pump relief was sent to the scene. Crews report they are making steady progress turning over and damping down.

    Divisional Officer Danny Fearn, Colchester and Tendering Community Commander, praised crews for their efforts. "This was a particularly large fire, which crews did well to bring under control relatively quickly. Their swift actions provided protection to a number of surrounding buildings and risks, keeping the community safe."
