Incidents

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service offers a 24/7 service to the press. Our incident database is updated on a regular basis by the media team and we have established a hotline - 01376 570 814 - where you will be able to reach us round-the-clock. We do ask that routine check calls are not made between 10pm and 6am, because all items of interest will be posted here as they happen. Please note this is NOT a service for the public and press from outside our local area are asked politely to adhere to these guidelines.
Photographs from incidents may be downloaded for publication. These may be used free of charge by all accredited newspapers and media agencies providing they carry a credit to Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. Breaches of this arrangement will result in an invoice of £70 per image. Our film footage may also be used under similar arrangement.

    Details: Gas leak and flooding in derelict building

    Address: Victoria Road, Southend

    Attendance: 2 x Southend, USAR-1 x High Volume Pump

    Firefighters were called to a severe gas leak affecting the top three floors of a derelict building.  Fire crews were required at the incident to pump out water from the flooded basement where the gas main was situated. 
    The water was approximately seven metres deep and crews used ECFRS Urban Search and Rescue-high volume pump to extract the water so that the gas board could reach the gas main to isolate the supply.  Crews had dealt with incident by 04:50

    Details: House fire

    Address: Sawyers Grove, Brentwood

    Attendance: 1 x Brentwood, 1 x Ingatestone, 1 x Harold Hill (London Fire Brigade)

    Firefighters were called to a fire in a three storey terraced house.  The house was 100 percent smoke logged.  Crews wore breathing apparatus and extinguished the fire by 21:22

    Details: Road traffic collision-one woman trapped

    Address: A120, Coggeshall

    Attendance: 1 x Coggeshall, 1 x Braintree, 1 x Colchester

    Firefighters were called to an RTC involving one vehicle and a pedestrian. One woman was trapped in the vehicle and crews used two sets of specialist cutting equipment.

    The woman was cut free from the vehicle by 17:56 and placed in the care of the Ambulance Service.  The Air Ambulance was also in attendance at this incident.

    Details: Dog with head trapped in cat flap

    Address: Weeley Road, Aingers Green, Great Bentley

    Attendance: 1 x Weeley

    Firefighters used an electric saw to release a dog which had got its head trapped in a cat flap. They had released the 'large' dog by 15:56hrs.

    Leading Firefighter Steven Ernst, Weeley Fire Station, said: "It is a 12 year-old Labrador and she had got her head stuck fast.

    "What had happened is she was out in the garden in the fine weather yesterday afternoon while the owner was out. When the thunder storm started yesterday afternoon she panicked and tried to run indoors through the cat-flap.

    "Obviously she is far to big to fit and once she had got her head in it was trapped by the flap, the harder she pulled the tighter it got. 

    "We took the flap off and then used a power saw to remove the entire cat flap and the managed to twist it off her head. She seemed fine, she just walked off and had a lay down. We were glad to get her out of her predicament."

    Details: 700 tonnes of straw alight

    Address: Barleylands Road, Billericay

    Attendance: 1 x Billericay, 1 x Basildon

    Firefighters tackled a blaze in 700 tonnes of straw. Crews have allowed the straw to burn in a controlled way having laid out hose reel to cover surrounding risks,

    The farmer assisted crews using his farming equipment to cut a fire break in the straw.

    Crews remain at the scene at 13:00hrs allowing the stack to burn in a controlled way.

    The cause of the fire is being investigated.

    Update - One fire engine from Baddow remains on the scene. the fire service anticipate being present at this incident for some time as a controlled burn takes place.

    Details: Shed and Caravan alight

    Address: Lowen Road, Chadwell St Mary

    Attendance: 2 x Orsett, 2 x Grays

    Firefighters tackled a fire which engulfed a shed and a caravan. The fire was attacked by crews on several fronts so they could quickly get on top of it.

    Wearing 10 sets of breathing apparatus and using two hose reel jets and one main jet the fire was extinguished by 18:50hrs.

    A full investigation will be carried out to establish the cause of the fire which is thought to be suspicious.

    Details: RTC - woman trapped

    Address: M11 Southbound between junctions 7 & 6

    Attendance: 2 x Harlow, 1 x Loughton, 1 x Old Harlow

    Firefighters are working to release a woman trapped in her car following a one vehicle RTC. Crews are using two sets of hydraulic cutting equipment in their efforts to release the woman.

    Update - After removing the roof from the vehicle crews released the woman by 07:54hrs leaving her in the care of the ambulance service.

    Details: Bungalow fire

    Address: London Road, Clacton

    Attendance: 1 x Weeley, 1 x Frinton, 2 x Clacton

    Firefighters tackled a fire in a bungalow in the early hours today. The officer in charge reported that it was a detached bungalow measuring 10 metres by 20 metres which was 25% alight and completely smoke logged.

    Crews had extinguished the fire by 05:02hrs wearing six sets of breathing apparatus and using three hose reel jets.

    The cause of the fire has been determined as accidental.

    Details: Bungalow Fire

    Address: Vauxhall Avenue, Jaywick

    Attendance: 2 x Clacton, 1 x Weeley

    Firefighters tackled a fire in a bungalow in Jaywick late last night. On arrival they found a bungalow measuring four metres by eight metres which was 40% well alight and completely smoke logged.

    Crews had extinguished the fire by 23:57hrs wearing six sets of breathing apparatus and using two hose reel jets. They remained at the scene for a further 35 minutes clearing smoke from the bungalow with a positive pressure ventilation fan.

    An investigation is being carried out to establish the cause of the fire.

    Firefighters tackled a blaze in approximately 5000 metres squared of grass in East Tilbury. Using two hose reel jets, water backpacks and beaters they had extinguished the fire by 21:00hrs
