Incidents

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service offers a 24/7 service to the press. Our incident database is updated on a regular basis by the media team and we have established a hotline - 01376 570 814 - where you will be able to reach us round-the-clock. We do ask that routine check calls are not made between 10pm and 6am, because all items of interest will be posted here as they happen. Please note this is NOT a service for the public and press from outside our local area are asked politely to adhere to these guidelines.
Photographs from incidents may be downloaded for publication. These may be used free of charge by all accredited newspapers and media agencies providing they carry a credit to Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. Breaches of this arrangement will result in an invoice of £70 per image. Our film footage may also be used under similar arrangement.

    Details: Car in garage alight

    Address: Auckland Close, Tilbury

    Attendance: 2 x Orsett

    A fire investigation will be carried out to establish the cause of an incident involving a car, a garage, a shed and several trees.
    Initially a single appliance was sent to tackle the incident, which was reported as a fence alight. But after a number of calls to ECFRS' Control, a second appliance was sent to assist.
    Firefighters reported that the blaze was well alight when they arrived at the scene. Crews wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels to tackle the incident, which was dealt with by 05:08 hrs.

    Details: Fire in bin store

    Address: Derry Court, Derry Avenue, South Ockendon

    Attendance: 2 x Grays

    Crews were called to a fire in an internal bin cupboard. On arrival at the scene, firefighters reported that the whole of the four-storey domestic dwelling was smoke logged.
    Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used one hose reel to tackle the incident and a thermal image camera to assist in a search. By 02:23 hrs, the fire was extinguished. They used a high pressure fan to clear the building of smoke.
    A joint Police and Fire Service investigation will be carried out to establish the cause of the incident.
    There were no casualties and residents did not need to be evacuated.

    Details: Classic car involved in fire

    Address: Lower Road, Hockley

    Attendance: 1 x Rayleigh Weir, 1 x Hawkwell

    Crews were called to a workshop on fire at Foxes Farm industrial units. A car enthusiast who was doing some welding work on a rare Skyline sports car had triggered a blaze involving the vehicles electrics.
    The 32-year-old man tackled the fire himself and suffered smoke inhalation. He was given oxygen therapy by firefighters at the scene and checked over by the Ambulance Service but did not need hospital treatment.
    Leading firefighter Rick Jones of Hawkwell Fire Station explained: "By the time we arrived, it was just a small fire and we used a stirrup pump to damp it down to make sure there was no chance of reignition and the area was left safe.
    "It appears that the electrics in the vehicle have been destroyed so that may be the end of restoration work."

    Details: Fatal road traffic collision

    Address: Ashingdon Road, Rochford

    Attendance: 1 x Rochford, 2 x Southend

    Crews were called to assist the Ambulance Service at the scene of a road traffic collision involving a single vehicle.
    There was one male casualty and the incident was dealt with by 13:30 hrs when firefighters said the vehicle had been made safe. It appears that the motorist suffered some kind of heart attack and despite efforts to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

    Details: Staff room on fire

    Address: Cafe Rouge, High Road, Loughton

    Attendance: 2 x Loughton

    Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used one hose reel to tackle a fire in a staff room. They were called after smoke was seen pouring from the roof of the Cafe Rouge premises.
    The incident was dealt with by 00:14 hrs. We have no information relating to the cause at this stage.

    Details: Farmhouse store alight

    Address: Bedlers Green, Great Hallingbury

    Attendance: 1 x Stansted, 1 x Dunmow, 1 x Bishops Stortford (Herts FRS), 1 x Sawbridgworth (Herts FRS)

    Crews were called to tackle a fire at a farmhouse. Initially two appliances were sent to the scene, but on arrival, the officer in charge requested the attendance of an additional two appliances for water and manpower.
    At 21:08 hrs, crews reported that this is a domestic property measuring 60m x 15m and that 50 per cent of the ground floor was well alight. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are using two hose reels to tackle the blaze.
    The incident involves a garage and storage area. Firefighters report that this is 100 per cent well alight and that they are using two main jets and three hose reels in tackling flames and in protecting surrounding buildings.
    The incident was brought under control by 23:47hrs but relief crews have been at the scene through the night turning over and damping down to ensure there are no hotspots and that the fire is fully extinguished.
    At 07:00 hrs Saturday, a one pump relief was still at the scene.
    A joint Police and Fire Service investigation will be carried out to establish the cause of the incident.

    Details: Straw stack on fire

    Address: Blind Lane, Birch

    Attendance: 2 x Colchester, 1 x Coggeshall

    Crews have worked through the night at an incident which began on Friday afternoon and involves 300 tonnes of straw. At 08:00 hrs Saturday, a one pump relief will take over on the scene as crews continue keeping a watching eye on the site and protecting surrounding risk.
    Initially two appliances were sent to the scene but the officer in charge requested the attendance of a third appliance for water.
    The stack was 100 per cent well alight when firefighters arrived at the incident and they used two hose reels to contain the fire and prevent it spreading to neighbouring areas.
    At 07:00 hrs this morning (Saturday) they report steady progress is being made.

    Firefighters were called to an RTC involving three vehicles.  No one was trapped, one 29 year old man suffered from shock and crews rendered first aid to the man.  The incident was dealt with by 16:00

    Address: Seaview Road, Canvey Island

    Attendance: 1 x Canvey

    Firefighters were called to an RTC involving two vehicles.  One woman was trapped and crews released her from her vehicle and carried out first aid.  The incident was dealt with by 14:30

    Details: Road traffic collision-Van hits lampost

    Address: Stock Road, Galleywood

    Attendance: 1 x Baddow, 1 x Chelmsford, 1 x Southend (rescue tender)

    Firefighters were called to an RTC involving a transit van, the van had collided with a lamp post.  One man was trapped and crews used one set of specialist cutting equipment to release the man by 10:11, the man was placed in the care of the Ambulance Service.
