Details: Blaze involving 50 scrap vehicles
Address: Autobrake, Haven Road, Colchester
Attendance: 2 xColchester, 1 x West Mersea, 1 x Tiptree, 2 x Manningtree, 2 x Brentwood (including control support vehicle)
Firefighters are tackling a major blaze involving 50 scrap cars. ECFRS Control officers have received dozens of calls to the incident as huge plumes of smoke could be seen for miles around.
Initially two appliances were sent to the scene and at 17:55 hrs, the officer in charge reported that crews wearing breathing apparatus were using a foam branch to douse flames. Firefighters reported that the cars were 100 per cent well alight and the officer in charge requested the attendance of an additional crew for manpower.
Later at 18:20 hours, he requested an additional pumping appliance to attend the incdent, along with a Pinzgauer special off-road vehicle from Manningtree. An additional pump and the ECFRS Control Unit were later sent to the scene from Brentwood as firefighters battled to contain flames.
At 18:20 hrs, Station Officer Costa Olymbios, the officer who has taken charge of the incident, reported that crews were using one foam branch, two main jets and a ground monitor in fire-fighting operations. He reported that the fire had been sectorised and that crews were working to bring flames under control.
At 18:20 hrs,Police were called in to deal with traffic congestion as crews have hose running across the road.
At 19:29 hrs, crews reported that the fire had been extinguished following assistance from scrap yard staff using a crane. Firefighters expect to be on the scene for some time turning over and damping down and ensuring there are no hotspots.
The last crew left the scene at 22:30 hrs. A revisit was carried out at 07:00 hrs Sunday to ensure the site remained safe.
A two pump relief will be sent to the scene at 20:30 hrs.
"We will be conducting a fire investigation into the cause of the incident, which appears to have started out as a car fire and spread across other derelict vehicles quite quickly" said Station Officer Costa Olymbios.
"We received quite a number of calls to the incident because it created such thick dense black smoke that could be seen from neighbouring areas.
"The first three crews had some difficulties with the closest water being 10 hose lengths away, so they had to work quickly to establish a water supply. Fortunately there were no surrounding buildings, so it was a matter of surrounding the fire and keeping it contained until flames were out." -

Attendance: 2 x Grays, 1 x Orsett
Firefighters were called to a caravan on fire on a permanent residential site. The caravan was 100 percent alight and crews wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels and one ground monitor to extinguish the fire by 07:33

Two gas cylinders were involved in the fire and were close by to the caravan on fire and are cooling off. Fire crews remain at the incident damping down and monitoring the gas cylinders.
Update 08:25
Crews had dealt with the incident and the cylinders have cooled down.
Sub Officer Dave Purkiss from Grays Fire Station said:
"The owner of the caravan on fire was asleep as the fire broke out, she was woken up by her smoke alarm that her boyfriend had installed just a few weeks ago. The woman in her thirties escaped unharmed from the caravan.
"As a precaution fire crews evacauted residents from six other caravans on the site, crews helped a disabled man from his caravan and led him to safety.
"This incident shows the importance of a working smoke alarm and how they can provide early indication to a fire, giving you time to escape."
The cause of the fire is believed to have been an electrical fault and the caravan has been completely destroyed by the fire.
