A neighbour heard a smoke alarm going off and saw smoke coming from a first floor flat above a row of shops this morning and called 999. The fire had broken out in the kitchen where a pan had been left on the cooker hob whilst cooking breakfast,  the resident had then fallen asleep and the flat became filled with smoke.

The 21 year old woman suffered from smoke inhalation and fire crews administered oxygen therapy to her.
The fire was extinguished by 07:30 and the flat was cleared free of smoke by a specialist fan.

Sub Officer Russ Freeman from Canvey Fire Station said:

"The working smoke alarm undoubtedly saved this woman's life. Smoke alarms provide you with that vital early indication to a fire giving you time to escape to safety and away from the toxic smoke which quickly fills the home in a fire."
