Incidents

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service offers a 24/7 service to the press. Our incident database is updated on a regular basis by the media team and we have established a hotline - 01376 570 814 - where you will be able to reach us round-the-clock. We do ask that routine check calls are not made between 10pm and 6am, because all items of interest will be posted here as they happen. Please note this is NOT a service for the public and press from outside our local area are asked politely to adhere to these guidelines.
Photographs from incidents may be downloaded for publication. These may be used free of charge by all accredited newspapers and media agencies providing they carry a credit to Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. Breaches of this arrangement will result in an invoice of £70 per image. Our film footage may also be used under similar arrangement.

    Details: Fire at Golf Club

    Address: Lords Golf and Country Club, Hullbridge Road, Rayleigh

    Attendance: 2 x Rayleigh, 1 x Hawkwell, 1 x Leigh

    Firefighters were called to a fire at a golf club.  A single storey building measuring 40 x 10 metres was on fire. Crews wore breathing apparatus and used four jets and three hose reels to extinguish the fire by 04:07

    Sub Officer Andrew Bicknell from Rayleigh Weir fire station said:

    "The fire affected a building which was adjacent to the main part of the golf club. It was used as changing rooms/toilets and a shop.  Several golf buggies were also damaged by the fire.

    "Firefighters did an excellent job in preventing the fire from spreading to the main building."

    The cause of the fire is unknown, it is being treated as a suspicious incident and ECFRS and the Police will carry out an investigation.

    Details: RTC - Car and Lorry

    Address: A133, Great Bentley

    Attendance: 1 x Clacton, 1 x Brightlingsea

    Firefighters are assisting ambulance crews at the scene of an RTC involving one car and one lorry. The Urban search and Rescue team have been called in to assist at this incident.

    Update - Crews released one woman by 12:16hrs. They used hydraulic cutting equipment and heavy duty airbags.

    This is a fatal incident.

    Details: House fire

    Address: Thurlow Walk, Grays

    Attendance: 2 Orsett, 1 x Grays

    Firefighters were called to a semi-detached house on fire.  Crews wore four sets of breathing apparatus and used two hose reels to extinguish the fire by 17:04

    Crews used a thermal image camera to check for any remaining hotspots and ventilated the house using a high pressure fan.

    Details: Chemical incident

    Address: Central Road, Harlow

    Attendance: 4 x Harlow (1 x aerial ladder platform) 1 x Old Harlow, 1 x Loughton, 1 x Grays

    Firefighters have been called to a chemical incident at a chemical processing site.  

    Update 15:15 The Incident Commander reports:

    One tank of approximately 1000 litres of vinyl acetate is vapouring off.  A 200 metre hazard zone is in place around the site.

    Update 15:55
    The vapour is being contained to the site, the site measures 150 x 20 metres.

    Update 16:10
    The incident has been dealt with, the chemical was deluged with water by on-site facilities in place.

    Station Commander John Sherrington from Harlow Fire Station said:

    "The vinyl acetate was self heating in the tank which caused it to expand and vapourise, this in turn activated the alarm and automatic deluge system on the tank.

    "Fire crews set up a hazard zone and were on stand by if the worst was to happen, approximately 50 employees were safely evacuated from the site before the arrival of the fire service."

    Details: House fire

    Address: Longhouse Road, Chadwell St Mary

    Attendance: 2 x Orsett, 2 x Grays

    Firefighters were called to a semi-detached house and garage on fire.  The house was 50 percent alight and 100 percent smoke logged.

    At 02:23 crews wearing breathing apparatus had the fire surrounded using three hose reels and one main jet.

    At 02:55 crews had extinguished the fire.

    The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage, ECFRS and the Police will carry out an investigation.

    Details: Fire at Scrap yard

    Address: Morelands Industrial Estate, Rettendon

    Attendance: 1 x Southwoodham, 1 x Wickford, 2 x Rayleigh Weir

    Firefighters were called to a portable office unit on fire at a scrap yard.  The office was 100 percent alight and measured 5 x 10 metres.  Crews used one hose reel and a ground monitor to extinguish the fire by 22:51

    The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage, ECFRS and the Police will carry out an investigation.

    Details: House fire

    Address: Oak Road, Grays

    Attendance: 2 x Grays

    Firefighters were called to a fire in a terraced house.  The first floor was heavily smoke logged and crews wore breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire by 20:47 using one hose reel.

    Crews used a thermal image camera to check for any hotspots.  To clear the property free from smoke crews used a high pressure fan.

    A woman aged 32 and her two children aged 8 and 7 months were safely out of the house before the arrival of the fire service. The family have been made homeless following the fire and the local authority were requested to re-house them.

    Details: Chip pan fire

    Address: Regents Close, Southminster

    Attendance: 2 x Burnham

    Firefighters were called to a chip pan on fire in a kitchen.  Crews wore two sets of breathing apparatus and used one hose reel to extinguish the fire by 19:50

    Details: Road traffic collision-car crashes into house

    Address: Fyfield Road, Ongar

    Attendance: 1 x Ongar, 1 x Leaden Roding, 1 x Harlow, 1 x Brentwood, 1 x Chelmsford

    Firefighters were called to an RTC involving a car and a lorry.  The car crashed into a house and the driver was trapped.  Crews used two sets of specialist cutting equipment to release the man by 13:33, he was then placed in the care of the Ambulance Service.

    Attendance: 1 x Leigh, 3 x Southend

    Firefighters were called to an RTC involving two vehicles.  One woman was trapped by her injuries.  Firefighters released the woman working with the Ambulance Service. The incident was dealt with by 10:39
