Our incident database is updated on a regular basis by the media team and we have established a hotline - 01376 570 814 - where you will be able to reach us round-the-clock. We do ask that routine check calls are not made between 10pm and 6am, because all items of interest will be posted here as they happen. Please note this is NOT a service for the public and press from outside our local area are asked politely to adhere to these guidelines.
Photographs from incidents may be downloaded for publication. These may be used free of charge by all accredited newspapers and media agencies providing they carry a credit to Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. Breaches of this arrangement will result in an invoice of £70 per image. Our film footage may also be used under similar arrangement.

Details: Baled hay alight

Cres spent several hours tackling a blaze involving 60 tonnes of baled hay. They reported that the hay, in a field off Chequers Road was well alight when they arrived at the scene. Firefighters used one hose reel and beaters to douse flames, which were under control by 04:45 hrs.
Two pumps and a special off-road Pinagauer were sent to deal with the incident. At 06:22 hrs, a relief crew was sent to the scene to continue turning over and damping down and to make sure the fire is fully extinguished.

Details: Man stuck in high tide
Address: The Strood, West Mersea
Attendance: 2 x Colchester, 1 x Mersea
Firefighters were called to rescue a man stuck in high tides in the Strood. The man had driven his car into the tide, which had been at its highest around half an hour earlier.
The officer in charge reported that the man was in no immediate danger and that there was no need for the coastguard or RNLI to attend.
Crews led the man to safety at 03:13.

Details: Bungalow fire

Firefighters attended a fire in a bungalow measuring seven by 10 metres. The officer in charge reported that 50% of the property was well alight.
Using two hose reel jets and one main jet and wearing two sets of breathing apparatus crews had extinguished the fire by 00:45hrs. No one was hurt or trapped a s a result of this fire.
An investigation will now take place to establish the cause of the fire.

Details: House Fire

Firefighters gave a man first aid and oxygen therapy after he was hurt in a house fire this evening.
The man had suffered burns to his hands and feet and suffered the effects of smoke inhalation.
Crews extinguished the fire in just under 20 minutes using one hose reel jet and then used a positive pressure ventilation fan to clear smoke from the property.
The man was left in the care of the ambulance service.

Crews are assisting at a series of incidents at a caretaker's house at St Peter's School. At 11:58 hrs they were called to deal with a flooding incident, then at 13:16 hrs a call was made to report a suspicious package and later crews requested the attendance of an Ambulance team to deal with a woman casualty.

Details: RTC - car and van, two people trapped

Two people were trapped following an RTC involving a car and a van. Firefighters used two sets of hydraulic cutting equipment to release the two people, both of whom were trapped in the car by their injuries.
Both had been released by 10:01hrs and left in the care of the ambulance service.

Details: Petrol Can alight at BBQ

Firefighters are warning people not to use petrol cans to light their barbecue's after a man burned his hands when his can caught light as he was pouring petrol onto a lit barbecue.
Crews quickly extinguished the fire using one hose reel jet and the 26 year-old man suffered minor burns to his hand and was going to make his own way to A&E.
Geoff Wheal, Corringham Station Commander, said: "In this case a man was pouring petrol onto a lit barbecue and the flames flashed back into the can setting it alight.
"The man threw the can onto the lawn but had already been burned.
"No one should ever pour any accelerant onto a lit barbecue and petrol should never be used to get a barbecue going.
"People should stick to proper barbecue lighters and carefully follow the instructions."

Firefighters are tackling a fire over three hectares of grass. Crews are using one hose reel jet and four water backpacks to fight the blaze.
Update 19:31hrs - The fire is now fully extinguished. The officer in charge estimates that this fire affected around four to five acres of grass. Crews used three hose reel jets, four water backpacks and one pinzgauer - a six wheel drive off road vehicle.

Details: Underground cable alight
Address: Victoria Road South, Chelmsford

Firefighters were called to smoke coming from a drain in Chelmsford this afternoon. On arrival they discovered that there was a fire in an underground electric cable junction.
The electricity board have isolated electricity in the are and crews have a covering jet on the fire. Surrounding roads have been closed.
Update - Firefighters took no action at this incident and left the scene in the care of electrical engineers at 16:19hrs.

Details: Gas leak - flats evacuated
Address: Presidents Court, Hoover Drive, Basildon
Attendance: 2 x Basildon, 1 x Wickford, 1 x Rayleigh Weir
A block of flats and shops have been evacuated after a gas leak was discovered. Firefighters were called to a strong smell of gas. National Grid engineers then discovered the leak and evacuated the block. Firefighters are standing by.UPDATE - The block has been evacuated by 12:02hrs and the leak made safe. Crews have now left the incident in the hands of gas engineers.
