Essex County Fire and Rescue Service offers a 24/7 service to the press. Our incident database is updated on a regular basis by the media team and we have established a hotline - 01376 570 814 - where you will be able to reach us round-the-clock. We do ask that routine check calls are not made between 10pm and 6am, because all items of interest will be posted here as they happen. Please note this is NOT a service for the public and press from outside our local area are asked politely to adhere to these guidelines.
Photographs from incidents may be downloaded for publication. These may be used free of charge by all accredited newspapers and media agencies providing they carry a credit to Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. Breaches of this arrangement will result in an invoice of £70 per image. Our film footage may also be used under similar arrangement.

Details: Container and van alight
Address: Springwood Industrial Estate( by the Braintree truck stop), Braintree
Attendance: 2 x Braintree
Crews were originally called to trees alight and one appliance was sent to the scene. On arrival, firefighters reported that the blaze involved a 20 foot container, a van and trees and undergrowth and the area was well alight. A second appliance was ordered to the scene for manpower.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels and a covering jet to douse flames. The incident was dealt with by 19:30 hrs.
We have no information relating to the cause at this stage. -

Details: Aircraft smoking
Address: North Weald Airfield, North Weald
Attendance: 2 x Epping, 1 x Ongar, 1 x Harlow
Crews were ca;;ed to North Weald aircraft after a plane coming into land was spotted with smoke coming from its cockpit.
Four appliances were mobilised to the incident, including a special foam tender. At 16:42 hrs, crews reported that they were standing by as a precautionary measure. The plane landed safely and there was no need for any action by firefighters. -

Details: Two seriously injured in road crash
Address: A13, Orsett. Slip road going onto main road Southend bound
Attendance: 1 x Basildon, 1 x Brentwood, 1 x Corringham, 1 x Grays
A motorcyclist and their pillion passenger were seriously injured after their vehicle went out of control hitting a crash barrier on the A13.
Crews arriving at the scene reported that both casualties were seriously injured and requested the attendance of Ambulance Service paramedics. Firefighters administered first aid at the scene while waiting for ambulances to arrive. -

Details: Deliberate bungalow fire
Address: Alvis Avenue, Jaywick
Attendance: 2 x Clacton
Crews were called to a fire involving a bungalow and discovered a small fire on the outside of the property. Firefighters used one hose reel to tackle the flames and after discovering lighted materials called in Police to deal with what they believed to be a suspected arson.
The incident was dealt with by 01:12 hrs. A joint Police and Fire Service investigation is ongoing. -

Details: Snakes given oxygen therapy
Address: Ridgeways, Harlow

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used one hose reel to tackle a fire in a garage used as a reptile store for some 40 snakes. They were called after a heating device in a tank exploded, sparking flames.
Nine snakes survived the incident and were given oxygen therapy by crews who rescued them from the garage, which measured 2m x 5m.
The reptiles were left in the care of their owner. -

Details: Deliberate fires on grassland
Address: Near roundabout on A128 at Herongate
Attendance: 2 x Brentwood, 1 x Ingatestone
Crews used two hose reels and back pack sprayers to tackle several fires that appeared to have been set deliberately on grass and shrubland close to the A128.
Initially one appliance was sent to the scene, reportedly to tackle a small grass fire. But on arrivalm the officer in charge requested an additional appliance and a third appliance later as the fires burned over a four acre site.
Police were called as firefighters discovered three separate seats of fire and evidence of illegal camping on site.
The incident was dealt with by 00:19 hrs. -

Details: Smoke coming from unoccupied cottage
Address: Colchester Road, White Colne
Attendance: 2 x Halstead, 1 x Colchester
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used one hose reel to tackle a fire in an unoccupied, end terraced cottage.
The alarm was raised after smoke was seen pouring from a back window. The whole of the property was heavily smoke logged, so after dealing with the fire, crews used a high pressure fan to clear the building of smoke.
The incident was dealt with by 12:37 hrs.

Details: Road traffic collision - two women trapped
Address: Swan Street, Sible Hedingham (outside Co-op)
Attendance: 1 x Halstead, 1 x Wethersfield, 1 x Colchester
Crews used specialist cutting equipment to free two casualties following a road traffic collision involving two vehicles.
The Air Ambulance has been deployed to the scene. At 11:52 hrs, rescue operations were in progress.
The two casualties - one in each vehicle - were freed by 12:24 hrs and left in the care of the Ambulance Service.

Details: Man injured in flat fire
Address: Fawters Close, Hutton
Attendance: 2 x Brentwood, 1 x Billericay
An 83-year-old man was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation following a fire in his ground floor flat. The man was rescued from the property before the arrival of crews. The alarm was raised after smoke was seen coming from the flat.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used one hose reel to tackle the fire. 50 per cent of the property was well alight when they arrived at the scene.
The fire was out by 01:54 hrs but crews remained at the scene using a high pressure fan to clear the flat of smoke.
The incident was dealt with by 02:06 hrs. -

Details: RTC - woman trapped
Address: A120, Coggeshall
Attendance: 1 x Coggeshall, 2 x Braintree, 1 x Colchester
Firefighters used specialist cutting equipment, airbags and a winch to release an elderly woman trapped following a road traffic collision. The vehicle was in a precarious position, hampering rescue operations.
The casualty was freed by 18:18 hrs and left in the care of Ambulance Service paramedics.
