Use the smoke alarm, not the Force...
“Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no alternative for a trusty smoke alarm on the ceiling kid…” That’s the message from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service in a Star Wars-themed safety video which has been released today.
The video features R2-ST, a life-sized droid built by Safer Communities Station Officer Andre Turner, as it arrives at HQ in Kelvedon on its first day of work.
The video uses the hype around the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens as a springboard to deliver community safety advice as R2-ST travels around the building sharing advice about smoke alarms with staff.
Assistant Chief Fire Officer Paul Hill said: “The fact that one of our officers has built and operates a life sized R2 droid was too good an opportunity to miss. This video is a fun way for us to get across safety advice about how important smoke alarms are.
“We provide free home safety visits in which one of our officers will come to your home, fit smoke alarms and give you all the advice and help you need to be as fire safe as possible.”
Station Officer Turner has spent years painstakingly building the R2 unit from scratch. The labour of love has resulted in R2-ST, named after his daughter Skye, one of a handful of full sized and fully operational R2 replicas in the country.
The video was produced by and features employees of Essex County Fire and Rescue Service.
