Tea and cakes in Southend for Dementia Awareness Week
Firefighters from Southend Fire Station’s Green watch gave people with dementia, and their carers, a chance to take a break with tea and cakes as part of Dementia Awareness Week.
Sub Officer Angus Neale, Leading Firefighter Trevor James and Firefighter Rob Cork joined Waitrose workers, Sally Chapman and Michelle Lee, Alzheimer's Society support officer, Tina Woodham, and Dementia Friends champion, Sally Holman at a special event at the Waitrose Supermarket in Southend.
All the firefighters at Southend Fire Station became Dementia Friends earlier this year which means they know how to deal with people suffering dementia who are lost, in distress or in need of help.
Sub Officer Neale said: "We have had a successful morning and we have really engaged with vulnerable members of our community. We are proud to be able to say we are Dementia Friends, which is a lifesaving scheme.
"We are here to help all members of our community and it is important that we reach out to people with dementia and their carers to help create safer communities."
