Stoptober for Fire Safety
With Stoptober now half way through Essex County Fire and Rescue Service is urging smokers to kick the habit for more than just health reasons.
Home fires caused by cigarettes, cigars and pipes result in more fire deaths in the home than any other cause.
One night last week Essex crews dealt with two house fires caused cigarettes which were not properly stubbed out. In each case the fires caused wide spread damage and put lives at risk.
Divisional Officer Neil Fenwick said: “There’s more than just health reasons for smokers to use Stoptober as a springboard to giving up the habit for good. Every five days, someone in the UK dies in a fire caused by cigarettes or smoking materials, it’s still the biggest killer in accidental fires in the home across the country.
“It only takes one cigarette left burning to start a potentially devastating fire. People shouldn’t underestimate the dangers associated with smoking in the home. Cigarettes burn at up to 700 degrees centigrade and can easily start a fire.
“I would like to say well done and keep it up to anyone who is already half way through giving up smoking this Stoptober, you’ll not only feel better and be healthier but you’ll be far safer from the risk of fire.”
