Essex County Fire and Rescue Service

Sprinklers installed in landmark tower block

A landmark tower block in Basildon has been fitted with fire sprinkler systems with help from an Essex County Fire and Rescue Service match funding scheme.

The Service has been working with Basildon Borough Council and Swan Housing Association by providing sprinklers for the 14 storey Brooke House residential tower block.

Sprinklers have been fitted throughout the tower block, both inside flats and in the refuge areas.

A total of £65,000 was made available in match funding to ensure that residents in the block would benefit from the most effective fire protection equipment available.

It is the sixth project in Essex to benefit from the Service’s match funding scheme.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service has pledged £750,000 over the last three years to help make sure that homes where the most vulnerable people live are protected by suppression systems. The funding is available to local authorities, housing associations and charities. Those at highest risk are given priority access to the fund.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Dave Bill said: “We are extremely pleased to be here today to not only hand over the cheque but to ensure this land mark, Grade Two listed building, and the people who live in it, have the most effective fire protection systems available.

“Sprinklers are proven life savers, there are no recorded cases of multiple fire deaths in premises where sprinklers are fitted. The sprinklers are unobtrusive and you are more likely to win the lottery than have an accidental sprinkler actuation."

Cllr Anthony Hedley, Basildon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Community Safety, said: “We have seen for ourselves how sprinklers can prevent fires from spreading and taking hold at other tower blocks where they have been installed through match funding schemes.

“We are delighted that lifesaving fire sprinkler systems have been installed in Brooke House residential tower block, helping to protect while keeping the people who live there safe.”

Sandra Fawcett, Executive Director of Operations at Swan Housing Association, said: “We were delighted to work in partnership with Essex County Fire and Rescue Service and Basildon Borough Council to support the funding of the new fire sprinkler system at Brooke House.”
