Special fire station visit for Martin
An autistic teenager’s birthday wish to tour a fire station became a reality thanks to firefighters in Great Dunmow.
Martin Monk, 19, told relatives on his birthday that he wanted to visit one of the County’s stations.
After being approached by his mother Carol firefighters at Great Dunmow Fire Station welcomed him on Saturday, January 16.
Through his condition, Martin struggles with fire station open days despite having a passion for fire engines.
Great Dunmow firefighter Gus Maby, who helped organise the visit, said: “Martin has a passion for fire appliances and machinery. He watched with enthusiasm as we completed our fire station checks. We laid out some hose and Martin operated some of our equipment and sat in the fire engine.
“We all enjoyed meeting Martin and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves."
The efforts of Great Dunmow Fire Station were praised by Martin’s mother, Carol.
She said: “Martin has been a fan of fire engines for many years. His main passion in life is fire engines.
“As he has got older he has struggled with open days because of his condition.
“I was delighted with the efforts made by the firefighters at Great Dunmow Fire Station. I would like to thank them for their support in helping make Martin’s wishes come true”.
