Smoke alarms for rented homes

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service is leading the way on making sure people living in private rented accommodation are as fire safe as possible.

Calls have gone up from the Local Government Association today asking for a law to be enacted which would force landlords to fit smoke alarms in all rental properties.

Last September ECFRS launched the Essex Landlord Accreditation Scheme (ELAS) which supports landlords in helping to drive up the quality of housing for tenants across the County’s private rented sector.

Landlords who ensure their homes are properly maintained and managed are eligible to join the scheme which will give them access:

•    direct access to impartial advice and support on relevant issues;
•    opportunities for networking at forums and events;
•    access to information on housing trends and needs in their areas which until now was only provided to local housing associations.
•    reductions on their insurance costs;

Through highlighting the County’s good landlords, the scheme will help tenants avoid falling foul of unscrupulous landlords and drive up the standards of housing in the private rented sector.

For further information about ELAS:

The scheme has been backed by Essex County Council and is managed by the Chief Fire Officers Association Blue Watch which was set up by the Chief Fire Officers Association to make living accommodation safer across the UK.  With a focus on the prevention of fire, carbon monoxide poisoning and other potentially fatal risks in the home, CFOA Blue Watch is well placed to add value to the scheme.

Divisional Officer Neil Fenwick said: “Smoke alarms are proven life savers and are something we believe every home, rented or otherwise, should have. They give vital warning at the first sign of fire giving everyone time to get safely out before calling us in.”

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service provide free smoke alarms as part of a home fire safety visit. To arrange a free home fire safety visit call 0300 303 0088 or email
