Smoke alarm alerts family to fire

A family of four were able to escape from a fire in their home thanks to their working smoke alarm which had been fitted by Essex County Fire and Rescue Service.

Last night, firefighters from Harlow and Old Harlow Fire Stations were called to a kitchen fire in The Fortunes, Harlow. On arrival crews found that the family’s oven was alight and the ground floor of the house was heavily smoke logged. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used one hose reel jet to quickly extinguish the fire.

Divisional Officer Neil Fenwick said:

“Incidents like this show the importance of a working smoke alarm in your home. Smoke alarms provide vital early warning at the first sign of fire giving you and your family time to get safely out of the building. Without a working smoke alarm, your chances of getting out of a fire safely are greatly reduced.”

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service provide free smoke alarms to anyone living in Essex. To arrange a free home fire safety visit call 0300 303 0088 or email
