Show your mum you care this Mother's Day

This Mother’s Day (Sunday 26 March) make sure your mum is safe from the risk of fire by checking she has a working smoke alarm in her home.

Whether you’re going out for a nice meal, popping over to her house with some flowers or giving her a call from across the miles, it’s a good chance to make sure she’s safe and well.

Smoke alarms are proven life savers, and ensuring she has a working one on every level of her house is the most important thing you can do.

If your mum already has smoke alarms, take a minute to test them when you visit. It is important that alarms are checked regularly to ensure they are working properly and do not need to be replaced or need new batteries.

If your mum is in any doubt about her current smoke alarms, or doesn’t have one, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service will visit her home and fit smoke alarms for free, as well as give her fire safety advice.

Neil Fenwick, Head of Community Safety, said: “Mother’s Day is the perfect day to check that your mum feels safe and well in her home.

“A smoke alarm is one of the most important pieces of equipment in the home. It gives vital early warning at the first sign of a fire, waking you if a fire starts in the night and giving all in the house plenty of time to get out before they are overcome by the deadly smoke that fills their property.

"While you're thinking about your family consider all elderly relatives, friends and neighbours who may be vulnerable and make it your business to make sure they have the same level of protection in their homes."
