MP backs smoke alarm campaign
Rebecca Harris, MP for Castle Point has joined forces with Essex County Fire and Rescue Service to urge people to make sure that they have working smoke alarms in their homes which are properly fitted and regularly tested.
Mrs Harris said “Smoke alarms provide a vital early warning at the first sign of fire giving you and your family time to safely get out, stay out and get the fire service out.”
Senior Divisional Officer Julian Ashley of Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said: “Smoke alarms are proven life savers, we recommend at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home.
“Once they have been fitted it is important to test them regularly to make sure that they are in full working order. It only takes seconds to test a smoke alarm and it could save your life.
“There is no excuse for not having a working smoke alarm in your home. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service provide a free home fire safety visit service in which we will come to anyone’s home, carry out a fire safety check and fit smoke alarms - all at no cost.”
Last year more than a quarter of the house fires attended by Essex County Fire and Rescue Service were to homes that did not have a smoke alarm installed.
