Live or work in Great Baddow?
Great Baddow Fire Station is on the look-out for new on-call firefighters, who are a vital part of today's fire and rescue service.
The call comes as part of Essex County Fire and Rescue Service’s countywide on-call firefighter recruitment campaign.
Last year ECFRS held a public consultation which outlined that Great Baddow Fire Station would change from day-crewed to on-call.
This means instead of having firefighters in the fire station during the day Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm, firefighters will respond to incidents when alerted by a pager, just as they already do in Great Baddow between 6pm – 9am on weekdays and the at weekends.
On-call firefighters have everyday lives and jobs, until their pager sounds; then they immediately make their way to the fire station. On-call firefighters are professional firefighters, on the front line, saving lives. They are paid employees and receive thorough training to enable them to respond to and deal with emergency situations.
To become an on-call firefighter you must live or work within five minutes of Great Baddow Fire Station, be over 18 and be physically fit, though support will be given to help you meet fitness requirements.
Simon Dedman, Station Manager at Great Baddow, said: “On-call recruitment can be difficult in commuter towns and smaller communities, because nowadays there are fewer people are around or working there during the day.
“On-call firefighters are a crucial part of local services and communities and the role is unpredictable, exciting and at the same time, extremely rewarding. I encourage anyone interested to apply.”
Great Baddow Fire Station is holding two recruitment sessions over the next month:
Saturday 28 October, 10am - 4pm, during the annual open day. Come along to see our demonstrations, get Halloween and bonfire safety advice, celebrate the station turning 50 and find out more about becoming an on-call firefighter while you’re there.
Saturday 18 November, 10am - 1pm, a dedicated recruitment drop in session. There's no need to book, just turn up on the day.
