John O'Groats to Land's End by bike for Charity
Three intrepid Chelmsford Firefighters are set to cycle the length of the UK to raise money for the Huntington's Disease Association.
Frank Allen, Dan Hart and Jon Foot, who are all members of Chelmsford Fire Station’s Blue Watch, will be joined by Julian Sutton and Mark Carter in cycling from John O'Groats to Land’s End between July 15 and 28. They will be accompanied by support team Shaun Hart and fellow firefighter Sean Walshe
The intrepid team are hoping to raise more than £5,000 for the charity through the more than 1,000 mile bike ride.
Frank said: “Huntington’s disease is in my family. It’s a hereditary condition which my mother was diagnosed with in 2002, she died in 2007. We have discovered that of her four children three of us carry the gene which means there is a 50-50 chance we have passed it on to our children.
“My family has been fundraising for this cause for years. My daughter and 69 year-old mother –in-law did a skydive last year, we held a charity ball in March this year and now we are going to cycle more than 1,000 miles with the aim of raising £5,000.
“We have all been training for months. There are five cyclists and we have a two man support teams travelling with us in a van. We hope to cover an average of 80 miles a day.
“It will be a physical challenge but the support we have all got from friends, family and colleagues has been amazing and it’s fantastic to know that we’ll have them behind us as we cycle.
“The entire team has shown huge commitment to this charity bike ride and now we are all just raring to go and looking forward to getting started.”
