Hollywood filmset hosts exercise
More than 30 firefighters have taken part in an exercise at a water treatment plant in East Hanningfield – previously used to film zombie blockbuster World War Z.
Crews from Basildon, Chelmsford, Great Baddow, Leigh and South Woodham Ferrers took part in ‘Exercise Hanning Tough’ at Hanningfield Water Treatment Works on Tuesday, June 7.
The simulation was set up to test firefighters response to an underground fire inside a water tank, with five people feared missing.
The scenario, organised by Leading Firefighter Steven Barclay, involved searching for people in teams using guidelines in complete darkness.
The Essex and Suffolk Water site was transformed into Hollywood film set for World War Z, starring Brad Pitt, in September 2011.
Assistant Divisional Officer Mark Wilby, the incident commander, said: “The exercise was a great success with firefighters using guidelines effectively in a very challenging scenario.
“Crews were enthusiastic and dedicated, working together superbly in darkness and heat.
“I would like to thank LFF Barclay for setting up a well organised and realistic scenario. I would also like to thank Essex and Suffolk Water for providing our crews with a fantastic site, one I will be recommending all our firefighters use.”
