Give the gift of life this Mother's Day
This Mother’s Day make sure your mum is safe from the risk of fire by making sure they have a working smoke alarm in their home.
While flowers and chocolates are a nice gesture, the gift of a smoke alarm on Sunday (March 30) could save her life. Smoke alarms are relatively inexpensive and while it may not automatically be appreciated as a traditional gift, it might well be The Gift of Life.
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service Divisional Officer Neil Fenwick, Safer Communities, said: “What better way to show your mum that you love them this Mother’s Day than to make sure that their homes are as fire safe as possible.
“A smoke alarm is one of the most important pieces of equipment in the home. It gives vital early warning at the first sign of a fire, waking you if a fire starts in the night and giving all in the house plenty of time to get out before they are overcome by the deadly smoke which fills their property.
“Smoke alarms cost only a few pounds and take just minutes to fit, but when a fire breaks out they are invaluable.
“Give your mother the gift of life this Mother’s Day by making sure she has properly fitted and working smoke alarms in her home.
"While you're thinking the family way - consider all elderly relatives, friends and neighbours who may be vulnerable and make it your business to make sure they have the same level of protection in their homes."
If you know mum already has smoke alarms, then take a minute to test them when you visit on Sunday. It is important that alarms are checked regularly to ensure they are working properly and do not need to be replaced or need new batteries.
