Fire Empower comes to Colchester
A group of 10 unemployed people have had their employment chances boosted thanks to a Firebreak course at Colchester Fire Station.
The participants passed out in front of friends and family at a special ceremony today (Friday, February 26).
Funded by the Department of Work and Pensions, the five day course included using hose reels, wearing specialist breathing apparatus, climbing ladders and taking part in mock rescues.
The Fire Empower course aims to improve job prospects, boost confidence and teach vital life skills through a series of challenging tasks.
Councillor Anne Turrell, Essex County Council and Essex Fire Authority member, handed certificates to the participants after the ceremony.
Sub Officer Terry Williams, lead instructor, said: “We have had a fun, enjoyable week working with some fantastic students. They were hard working and respectful, the students were a real pleasure to teach.
“New friendships have been made over the week and the students have gone home with life skills that will help boost their employment chances.”
