Festive lights and decorations: be safe this Christmas
Christmas is a time of festivities, being with those we love and sharing gifts.
It’s also the time of year that we dust off decorations and lights that have been kept hidden away for 12 months – or occasionally treat ourselves to new ones.
That could mean fairy lights, candles, electronic decorations or anything else you might use to make your home look more festive: but you should always be sure they don’t pose a fire risk before use.
Here’s five fire safety tips to help ensure your decorations are safe this Christmas:
•Check your Christmas tree lights conform to the British Standard – never buy cheaply online if you’re unsure where they’re coming from.
•Never place candles near your Christmas tree or furnishings.
•Decorations can burn easily - don't attach them to lights or heaters.
•Don't overload electrical sockets. When you go to bed, make sure you switch Christmas lights off and unplug them.
•Keep candles, lighters and matches out of the reach of children. Never leave burning candles unattended.
We are committed to ensuring 100% of homes in the county have a working smoke alarm. So, to help this happen, we carry out home safety visits to anyone living in Essex, completely FREE of charge.
