Felmores flats get fire suppression system thanks to Service scheme

Automatic fire suppression systems have been fitted to flats in the Bockingham Green area of Basildon’s Felmores Estate thanks to Essex County Fire and Rescue Service’s match funding scheme.

The Service has been working with Basildon Council’s housing team to fit water misting systems, which operate automatically when a fire breaks out to contain and extinguish the blaze, to flats in the estate.

The first block to get the system was involved in a devastating fire in 2013. The fire, which broke out in a ground floor bedsit, caused a huge amount of destruction and left a number of families temporarily homeless.

Divisional Officer Mark Earwicker, Technical Fire Safety, said: “Automatic fire suppression systems offer the best fire protection available. They prevent fires from spreading by containing them to the room where they break out and often will completely extinguish a fire almost straight away.

“The fire which hit these flats in 2013 would not have spread to cause the damage it did if the water misting systems were in place then. It is great to be here today knowing that through our collaboration with Basildon Council these flats have such affective fire safety systems installed.”

Mandy Skeat, Basildon Council’s Head of Housing, said: “This is a very important project and it has been an extremely effective working partnership between us and Essex County Fire and Rescue Service.

“Most importantly thanks to this project our tenants are now as safe as they possibly can be from the risk of fire.”

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service will continue working with Basildon Council as automatic fire suppression systems are fitted across the rest of the estate.

The Service has pledged £250,000 to help make sure that homes where the most vulnerable people live are protected by sprinkler systems. The funding is available to local authorities, housing associations and charities. Those at highest risk are given priority access to the fund.
