Exercise tests high rise response in Basildon
A major exercise has helped test firefighters' response to a sixth floor fire at a major housing development in Basildon.
Crews from Basildon, Grays and Billericay took part in ‘Exercise High Tower’ at the iconic Trafford House building, in Station Way, yesterday (Thursday, May 12).
More than 20 firefighters wearing breathing apparatus trained for a scenario where smoke was reported coming out of flat on the sixth floor with people reported missing.
The exercise gave firefighters the opportunity to train for a high rise fire while familiarising themselves with the new layout of the building.
Assistant Divisional Officer Craig McLellan said: “The exercise was a huge success and gave our crews the chance to train in an iconic building that is being transformed into hundreds of flats.
“Training for high rise fires is a part of our firefighter’s continual development and this exercise allowed crews to familiarise themselves with the building's layout, stairwells and facilities.
“I would like to thank the site owners who allowed us access to train inside their development. I also like to thank Leading Firefighter John Warmann and Leading Firefighter Adam Allison who spent the past three months organising this comprehensive exercise for crews from across the County.”
