Canvey Flood Awareness Day
Canvey Fire station will host a special multi-agency event to give flooding advice to Canvey residents and businesses on Saturday September 19.
Representatives from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, the Environment Agency, and Essex County Council’s Flood and Water Management Team will be on hand at the station between 10am and 2pm making sure everyone has all the advice they need to help reduce the risk of flooding to their property.
The event will also provide information about the joint working initiatives which sees ECFRS and the Environment Agency working together to reduce the likelihood of flood waters reaching homes and businesses.
Five locations near the sea wall have been indentified where water can be pumped directly into the sea to by using Essex Fire and Rescue’s fire appliances. In an extreme event this would assist in lowering water levels quicker on the island to further reduce the risk of property flooding.
Assistant Divisional Officer Dave Moore said: “We have been working closely with our partners to work out the most efficient way to alleviate flooding on Canvey. We have identified five areas where our appliance pumps can be used to assist in the quicker removal of potential flood water off the Island during at times of extreme rainfall. This will help to further reduce the risk of properties being flooded.
“The Ready for Flooding day at Canvey Fire Station will give us an opportunity to tell people in Canvey how they can make sure they are protected from the risks posed by flooding and let them know about all the work which is going on to prevent flooding from happening in the first place”
Dave Knagg, Operations Manager of the Environment Agency commented: “We are pleased to be working with Essex County Fire and Rescue Service to further reduce the flood risk on Canvey Island and increase resilience to extreme rainfall events in order to minimise the devastating impacts flooding can have. This is a great example of our organisations working together for the communities we serve.”
